Spiral Jet Mill
This spiral jet mill generates a supersonic speed vortex into which the material is introduced, utilizing the vacuum created by a venturi-nozzle. Each particle of material being carried in the gas stream is subject to centrifugal and radial forces. Micronization occurs via particle collision.
A static classifier determinates the particle size profile. Because spiral jet mills have no rotating components, there are no bearings, shaft seals or lubricants required. Hence, no contamination is possible. They are mainly used for processing APIs. The spiral jet mill is used by 90% of the pharma companies (mirconization of APIs).
Optional features: Oval chambers for spiral jet mills
Schedio has developed the oval milling chamber to reach particle size distributions between 50 and 100 µm. Normally, this particle size distribution is difficult to reach with standard mills since the particles could be too fine for a pin mill and too large for a spiral jet mill.
The specific energy applied to the particles can be reduced compared to the standard cylindrical chamber, which allows to reach a higher particle distribution by having fewer effective collisions. The advantage of this configuration is that it can be installed as a plug & play spare part in the jet mill, hence there is no need for adapters or for replacing other parts of the unit.
Optional features: Rotating agitators for spiral jet mills
For sticky compounds, any Schedio jet mill from SSM100 to SSM750 can be equipped with a double in-line agitation system. Even though rarely needed, this execution is very useful when all the other measures, such as PTFE, elliptical chamber and different nozzles angles fail.
Any formation of crust is removed from the venturi, the wear plates, the grinding ring, and the classifier, all at once. The system includes two independent agitators, one for the venturi and one for the milling / classification section. This solution allows to micronize highly sticky powders without stops during the process.
